RESUMEN

With the growth of interest in veterinary ethics, the teaching of ethics to veterinary students has become more important. This study collects comprehensive data about ethics education at veterinary faculties in Turkey to contribute to the international literature. A cross-sectional descriptive survey design is used to collect data via questionnaire. Of the 31 faculty members actively teaching ethics at 24 of the 29 veterinary faculties in Turkey (as of the end of 2021), 30 responded to the survey. By the end of 2021, ethics courses in 24 veterinary faculties in Turkey were conducted between the 7th and 10th semesters with similar content across the examined institutions. Of the 31 faculty members responsible for ethics education, 22 were ethicists. Theoretical lectures and multiple-choice tests were the most preferred methods for teaching and assessment. The most preferred learning outcome to be gained by students was ethical awareness. Integrity by ethicists and morality by faculty members from other departments were considered the most important virtues. The collected qualitative data regarding the strengths of ethics education and areas for improvement were varied and controversial. Ethics training should be an ongoing process throughout veterinary education. Applied ethics education should be comprehensively included in the curricula and carried out with the cooperation of faculty members working in clinical fields.

RESUMEN

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images obtained using different voxel sizes in measuring trabecular bone microstructure in comparison to micro-CT. Materials and Methods: Twelve human skull bones containing posterior-mandibular alveolar bone regions were analyzed. CBCT images were obtained at voxel sizes of 0.075 mm (high: HI) and 0.2 mm (standard: Std), while micro-CT imaging used voxel sizes of 0.06 mm (HI) and 0.12 mm (Std). Analyses were performed using CTAn software with the standardized automatic global threshold method. Intraclass correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the consistency and agreement of paired measurements for bone volume (BV), percent bone volume (BV/TV), bone surface (BS), trabecular thickness (TbTh), trabecular separation (TbSp), trabecular number (TbN), trabecular pattern factor (TbPf), and structure model index (SMI). Results: When compared to micro-CT, CBCT images had higher BV, BV/TV, and TbTh values, while micro-CT images had lower BS, TbSp, TbN, TbPf, and SMI values (P<0.05). The BV, BV/BT, TbTh, and TbSp variables were higher with Std voxels, whereas the BS, TbPf, and SMI variables were higher with HI voxels for both imaging methods. For each imaging modality and voxel size evaluated, BV, BS, and TbTh were significantly different (P<0.05). TbN, TbPf, and SMI showed statistically significant differences between imaging methods (P<0.05). The consistency and absolute agreement between micro-CT and CBCT were excellent for all variables. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the potential of high-resolution CBCT imaging for quantitative bone morphometry assessment.

RESUMEN

The aim of this research was to determine the average length of a Thoroughbred horse's racing career in Turkey using survival functions of Thoroughbred horses with various characteristics. In addition, the aim was to identify risk factors that could influence the duration of a Thoroughbred horse's racing career and develop a survival model that took these factors into account. A total of 11,721 Thoroughbred horses born in 2007 and later were included in the study population. The horses involved in the study were followed for a minimum of 1 year. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to calculate the average length of racing career for each factor studied. Extended Cox regression analysis was used to determine the risk factors upon time of career ending and to create a survival model. Results showed that, the mean career length of Thoroughbred horses was 17.79 months (95% CI: 17.41-18.13). Also, "starting age of the race," "number of starts," "type of track where the race started," "racing on a single type racetrack" and "earning status" were found risk factors that affect the length of the racing career. Earnings was the top relative contributor to the established model, and its sole adjusted effect showed that being in the lowest earning group increased the hazard of career ending 2.28 times (95% CI:1.98-2.61) compared to horses with highest earning group. In conclusion, clear differences upon the length of racing career was observed for each investigated factor. Future studies should be considerate of these differences when analyzing population data.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to describe the thermal variation of external reproductive tracts during ejaculation in relation to sperm quality in dogs. Forty-six adult fertile dogs were monitored using a thermal camera before, during and after the semen collection, taking into account penile and scrotal temperatures as reproductive thermal patterns while eye and perianal temperatures were recorded as complementary thermal patterns of behavioral response. The parameters were classified depending on age (≤4 years and >4 years), body weight (BW) (≤75 kg and >75 kg), sperm concentration (CON) (≤300 million and >300 million), total testicular volume (TTV) (≤600 cm3 and >600 cm3) and total ejaculation time (TET) (≤800 s and >800 s) of the animals from which semen was collected successfully. Heavier males (p < 0.05) that have more consistent testicles (p < 0.01) as well as quicker ejaculate responders (p < 0.001) and lower scrotal temperature had better semen (Δ motility) freezability. The lower eye temperature prior to the ejaculation (p < 0.01), lower scrotal temperature following ejaculation (p < 0.01), and conversely, higher penile temperature during the ejaculation (p < 0.001) had a higher sperm concentration. Furthermore, the sperm freezability was negatively correlated with total ejaculation time (r = -0.39, p < 0.05) and sperm abnormalities were lower in the ejaculate of dogs having a higher temperature of the scrotum, bulbus and penis. In conclusion, infrared monitoring throughout semen collection in dogs can provide information on behavioral reactions during human manipulation, as well as semen quality and testicular functionality.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To assess the in vitro performance of high-definition (HD) US, CBCT and periapical radiography for the visibility of proximal and recurrent caries in teeth with and without restoration. METHODS: A total of 240 molar teeth were divided into eight groups each comprised of 30 teeth. Control groups consisted of teeth without caries (Group 1-4; N = 120), whereas diseased groups consisted of teeth with proximal caries (Group 5-8; N = 120 teeth). Finally, a total of four image sets were obtained as follows: i) PSP periapical radiography, ii) CBCT 0.075 mm voxel size, iii) CBCT 0.2 mm voxel size and iv) HD US images. The image sets were viewed separately by four observers by using a 5-point confidence scale. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated. The areas under the ROC curves were compared using chi-square tests. Significance level was set at α = 0.05. RESULTS: Intraobserver agreement for both readings for the four observers ranged between 0.848 and 0.988 for CBCT (0.075 mm) images; 0.658 and 0.952 for CBCT (0.2 mm) images; 0.555 and 0.810 for periapical images; 0.427 and 0.676 for US images. Highest AUC values were found for CBCT (0.075 mm) images and lowest for US images. Statistically significant differences were found among CBCT (0.075 mm) images and US images (p < 0.001), CBCT (0.2 mm) images and US images (p < 0.001) and periapical images and US images (p < 0.001) for the detection of proximal caries. CONCLUSION: Periapical and CBCT images outperformed HD US imaging in the detection of proximal dental caries.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate alterations in corneal biomechanical properties before and 6 months after conventional trabeculectomy (TRAB) and Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation. METHODS: Thirty-nine eyes of 39 patients were evaluated retrospectively. Complete ophthalmological examinations including evaluation of corneal biomechanical properties using the Ocular Response Analyzer were performed before and after 6 months postoperatively. A mean of four measurements for corneal hysteresis (CH), corneal resistance factor (CRF), Goldmann correlated intraocular pressure (IOPg), and corneal compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc) was recorded. The participants had undergone trabeculectomy or shunt surgery as the first surgical procedure for glaucoma treatment of uncontrolled IOP with maximum antiglaucoma eyedrops. RESULTS: There were 20 eyes of 20 patients in trabeculectomy group and 19 eyes of 19 patients in AGV implantation group. There was no significant difference between two groups in terms of sex, age, eye laterality, lens status, antiglaucoma drug usage, preoperatively measured Mean Deviation of Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer, CH, CRF, IOPcc, and IOPg (p > 0.05). CH and CRF increased significantly after shunt surgery (p < 0.001). CH increased in trabeculectomy group postoperatively (p < 0.001); however, CRF showed a small amount of decrease, but this reduction was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CH and CRF showed higher increase after AGV surgery than trabeculectomy surgery (p < 0.05). There was no significant correlation between IOP changes and CH-CRF changes in both TRAB and AGV groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: According to our results, surgical technique differences may have an impact on postoperative corneal biomechanical outcomes. AGV surgery offers better corneal biomechanical results than standard trabeculectomy in 6-month follow-up.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to determine the serum concentrations, ovarian presence and expression of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in pre-pubertal, bitches with signs of ovarian remnant syndrome (ORS) and intact bitches. In addition, we aimed to verify the suitability of serum AMH concentrations for diagnostic purposes in sterilized bitches and/or in suspected cases of ORS in the field of veterinary medicine. For this purpose, 36 healthy female dogs divided into six groups: proestrus, oestrus, dioestrus, anoestrus, pre-pubertal and ORS. Serum AMH concentrations were determined by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay, and ovarian presence and distribution of AMH was confirmed by immunohistochemical and qPCR techniques. According to the results of qPCR, while the expression values of AMH were at the highest concentrations in the proestrus and oestrus, there was a statistically significant decrease in these values at the later stages of the cycle (p < 0.05). According to hormone analysis, the serum AMH values of the ORS group had decreased significantly compared with the proestrus and oestrus (p < 0.05). Although serum AMH levels of ORS group were increased compared with anestrus and pre-pubertal groups, this increase was statistically non-significant (p > 0.05). Immunohistochemically, AMH expression was first observed in the granulosa cells of primordial follicles in folliculogenesis. Expression values were the highest in the proestrous and oestrus groups, but values from bitches in later stages of the cycle were statistically significant decrease in comparison with these groups (p < 0.05). As a result, AMH concentration and expression were found to be higher in proestrus and oestrus than in other periods (p < 0.05). In addition, the measurable level of AMH concentration in bitches with ORS is an indication that it can be used in the diagnosis of ORS.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES:: To examine the effectiveness of terahertz (THz) pulsed imaging (TPI) in comparison to intraoral photostimulable phosphor late (PSP) and cone beam CT (CBCT) for the detection of dental caries ex vivo. METHODS:: Newly extracted 32 human permanent teeth surfaces (16 with caries and 16 without caries) were serially sectioned mesiodistally and imaged by using four image sets as follows: (1) CBCT; (2) PSP; (3) THz movie video; and (4) THz static images. All images were evaluated twice separately by two calibrated observers for the presence/absence of caries using a 5-grade rating/confidence scale. Weighted κ coefficients were calculated. Different image sets were compared with the histological gold-standard using the receiver operating characteristic and area under curves for each image set were compared using χ2 tests, with a significance level of α = 0.05. RESULTS:: Intra- and interobserverκ-values for all image sets were almost excellent ranging between 0.777 and 0.988. Mean Az values of observers and readings were 0.898 for CBCT, 0.888 for PSP images, 0.853 for THz static images and 0.781 for THz video movie. No statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) were found between Az values for the different image sets. When observer scores were evaluated according to caries location again no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) were found between Az values for the occlusal and proximal caries for the four image sets. CONCLUSIONS:: Terahertz pulsed imaging was found to be successful for the detection of dental caries ex vivo.

RESUMEN

Canine transmissible venereal tumour (CTVT) is a naturally occurring contagious neoplasm of dogs located mainly on the external genitalia of both sexes. The course of vincristine chemotherapy, the most effective and practical therapy, is affected by the immune status of the host. The aim was to investigate recombinant human interferon alpha-2a (rhIFNα-2a) and vincristine for treatment of CTVT. A total of 21 female dogs were included. In group I (n = 9), vincristine (0.025 mg/kg, IV) was administered weekly. In group II (n = 6), dogs were injected intratumorally weekly with 1.5 million IU rhIFNα-2a. In group III (n = 6), rhIFNα-2a and vincristine were combined. No tumour regression was observed after three injections of rhIFNα-2a in group II and weekly vincristine was administered. The number of tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), mitotic figures and apoptotic cells were counted in subsequent incisional tumour biopsies. The Kaplan-Meier Method was used to analyse survival using complete tumour regression as the outcome and Breslow Test was used for comparison of survival curves. Differences in TILs, cell proliferation and apoptosis between groups were assessed by analysis of covariance. Complete regression was observed in all animals included. Mean duration of vincristine treatment for complete regression was shorter in group II (3.50 weeks, 95% CI, 3.06-3.94, P < 0.05) and group III (3.17 weeks, 95% CI, 2.84-3.49, P < 0.01) compared to group I (5.11 weeks, 95% CI, 4.42-5.80). Vincristine and rhIFNα-2a combination increased TILs in CTVT biopsies compared to vincristine treatment (P = 0.017) and vincristine treatment after rhIFNα-2a (P = 0.049). Vincristine treatment after rhIFNα-2a (Group II; P < 0.001) and rhIFNα-2a and vincristine combination (Group III; P < 0.001) decreased apoptosis. The results indicate that intratumoral rhIFNα-2a treatment alone is not effective in CTVT. However, combination of rhIFNα-2a and vincristine shortens the duration of treatment compared to vincristine therapy.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the ex vivo diagnostic ability of 9 different cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) settings in the detection of recurrent caries under amalgam restorations in primary teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-two primary teeth were used. Twenty-six teeth had dentine caries and 26 teeth did not have dentine caries. Black class II cavities were prepared and restored with amalgam. In the 26 carious teeth, recurrent caries were left under restorations. The other 26 intact teeth that did not have caries served as controls. Teeth were imaged using a 100×90-mm field of view and a 0.2-mm voxel size with 9 different CBCT settings. Four observers assessed the images using a 5-point scale. Kappa values were calculated to assess observer agreement. CBCT settings were compared with the gold standard using a receiver operating characteristic analysis. The area under the curve (AUC) values for each setting were compared using the chi-square test, with a significance level of α=.05. RESULTS: Intraobserver kappa values ranged from 0.366 to 0.664 for observer 1, from 0.311 to 0.447 for observer 2, from 0.597 to 1.000 for observer 3, and from 0.869 to 1 for observer 4. Furthermore, interobserver kappa values among the observers ranged from 0.133 to 0.814 for the first reading and from 0.197 to 0.805 for the second reading. The highest AUC values were found for setting 5 (0.5916) and setting 3 (0.5886), and were not found to be statistically significant (P>.05). CONCLUSION: Variations in tube voltage and tube current did not affect the detection of recurrent caries under amalgam restorations in primary teeth.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the effect of intra-amniotic synbiotic inclusion and continued synbiotic supplementation in the diet on the performance, intestinal epithelium integrity, and cecal microflora of broiler chickens. In Experiment 1, 510 eggs containing viable embryos were divided into 3 groups of 170 eggs each. The first group was not injected and served as a negative control ( NC: ). The next group was injected with 0.9% NaCl and was the positive control ( PC: ). The synbiotic-injected group ( S: ) was injected with a 0.5% inulin and 1 × 106 Enterococcus faecium solution. The non-injected and synbiotic injected groups were further divided into 2 sets for Experiment 2 and the birds were offered either a basal or synbiotic supplemented diet (1% inulin and 2 × 109 E. faecium cfu/kg feed). One hundred ninety-six broiler hatchlings were randomly allocated in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement that included an intra-amniotic treatment (non-injected or synbiotic injected) and a dietary treatment (basal or synbiotic supplemented diet). The results showed that the administration of an intra-amniotic synbiotic to embryonated eggs on d 17 of incubation did not affect the hatchability or hatching weight of the birds. However, intra-amniotic synbiotic inclusion had a positive effect on FCR at d 0 to 42 (P = 0.041) and d 22 to 42 (P = 0.036). There was no significant interaction effect on the growth performance of the birds between the intra-amniotic and dietary synbiotic treatment during different or entire experimental periods. Villus height and goblet and proliferating cell nuclear antigen ( PCNA: ) positive cell counts were positively influenced by intra-amniotic and dietary synbiotic treatments. Our results also indicated that intra-amniotic synbiotic injection followed by dietary supplementation with a synbiotic significantly increased Lactobacillus colonization and decreased coliform population in the broiler cecum. Cecal butyric acid concentration increased proportionally to the cecal Lactobacillus count with dietary synbiotic supplementation on d 42. In summary, combined intra-amniotic and dietary synbiotic treatments improved broiler intestinal integrity and increased cecal beneficial bacteria populations.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Chronic gastritis is a common diagnosis in dogs with signs of chronic vomiting. However, there is no data concerning endoscopic and histopathological agreement in dogs with chronic gastritis. Thus, a question should be raised whether taking gastroduodenal biopsies in dogs with chronic gastritis is necessary or not. Consequently, the purpose of the study was to compare the endoscopic and histopathological agreement in dogs with chronic gastritis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 22 non-pregnant client-owned dogs with the signs of chronic gastritis were enrolled in this prospective study. Procedures including clinical examination, blood analysis, and diagnostic imaging were performed before anaesthesia. Biopsies obtained from gastroduodenal sites were histopathologically evaluated. A total of 110 gastroduodenal samples were examined. RESULTS: Sixty-eight samples had abnormal histopathology and endoscopy while 11 showed normal histopathological and endoscopic evidence. CONCLUSION: The obtained data demonstrated that it is not necessary to take extra gastroduodenal biopsies in dogs with evidence of endoscopic gastroduodenitis. We also believe that further prospective studies, including cost and time effectiveness and more specific comparison between endoscopic appearance and histopathology, are necessary to make final recommendations regarding the need of using both procedures for definitive diagnosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate observer ability to diagnose ex vivo simulated endodontic furcal perforations in root-filled teeth from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images using different artifact reduction algorithms. STUDY DESIGN: Our study consisted of 135 first maxillary molar teeth. In 89 teeth, furcation perforations were created using dental burs. Forty-six teeth without artificial perforations were used as controls. MTA Fillapex, Activ GP, and AH Plus were used with or without metal posts. All teeth were imaged using Planmeca ProMax 3-D Max CBCT, and four image modes were obtained as without artifact reduction and with artifact reduction in low, medium, and high modes. Images were evaluated by three observers for the presence or absence of furcation perforation using a five-point scale. Weighted kappa coefficients were calculated to assess observer agreement. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed. Areas under the curve (AUCs) were calculated for each image mode, observer, treatment group, and reading and were compared using Χ(2) tests, with a significance level of α = 0.05. The effects on diagnosis were calculated using analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: Intraobserver agreements for all observers ranged from 0.857 to 0.945. Kappa coefficients among different observers ranged from 0.673 to 0.763. AUC values ranged from 0.83 to 0.92, and there were no statistically significant differences (P > .05) between different CBCT image modes. Ratings in Activ GP treatment groups with or without posts showed statistically significant differences (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: All CBCT image modes performed similarly in detecting furcal perforations near different root canal sealers with or without posts.

RESUMEN

Ptaquiloside (PTA) is a potent genotoxic carcinogenic compound, which is found in bracken ferns and predominantly causes gastric tumors in humans, as well as bladder tumors and chronic enzootic hematuria in cattle. The underlying molecular mechanisms of PTA remain a topic for interdisciplinary investigation. The aim of the present study was to determine the possible cytotoxic effect of 24 h of PTA exposure in Crandall feline kidney (CrFK) and human gastric cells (the HGC-27 cell line) using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and lactose dehydrogenase (LDH) analysis. The cytotoxic effects of PTA (0.0005-500 µg/ml) were found to increase in a dose-dependent manner, whereby the half maximal inhibitory concentration values were 11.17 and 11.86 µg/ml in the CrFK cells, and 2.03 and 2.56 µg/ml in the HGC-27 cells, by LDH and MTT assay, respectively. The results of the present study are consistent with those of previous studies associated with the cytotoxicity of PTA; however, cytotoxicity was identified to occur at significantly lower doses. This cytotoxic effect in vitro at particularly high doses may be linked to the initiation of carcinogenesis as a result of oxidative stress.

RESUMEN

Cyclin D1 is an important positive regulator of the G1/S phase of the cell cycle. We investigated the association between the CCND1 G870A polymorphism and susceptibility to papillary thyroid cancer in Turkish people. This study covered 102 patients with papillary thyroid cancer and 174 healthy controls. CCND1 genotyping was determined by the PCR-RFLP method. We found that the A allele frequency was higher in the cases than in the controls (p=0.042). On stratification analysis, papillary thyroid cancer risk was significantly elevated in individuals older than 45 years with the A allele (OR=1.91, 95% CI, 1.09-3.35, p=0.024) and in females with the A allele (OR=1.73, 95% CI, 1.06-2.84, p=0.029), compared to the G allele. According to the subject age, there was an increased papillary thyroid cancer risk for the individuals older than 45 years with the AA genotype (OR=2.28, 95% CI, 1.02-5.13, p=0.046) compared to the AG+GG combined genotypes. In conclusion, it is suggested that the CCND1 G870A polymorphism may contribute to the susceptibility to papillary thyroid cancer, especially in those who were older subjects (45 ≤ years old) and female, in the Turkish population.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to identify the seroprevalance of diseases which are zoonotic and responsible from abortion such as toxoplasmosis, listeriosis and brucellosis in Holstein crossbred cattle of different age and sex in Adana province, between 2008 April-September. METHODS: For this purpose, blood serum samples were collected from 132 cattle and analyzed for Toxoplasma gondii, Listeria monocytogenes and Brucella abortus antibodies. T. gondii, L. monocytogenes and Brucella abortus antibodies were determined by the standard Sabin- Feldman Dye Test (SFDT), Osebold method and Microtube Agglutination Test (MAT) respectively, from the blood serum samples. RESULTS: 132 serum tested 56.06% samples of T. gondii, 40.9% and 3.03% of L. monocytogenes and defined the B.abortus antibodies were found to be seropositive terms.
